JUAN TRIGOS, composer and conductor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Juan Trigos, Mexican-American composer and conductor born in Mexico City in 1965. The search for a personal musical language has led him to a concept he refers to as Abstract Folklore <\/em><\/strong>\u2014 A process in which he abstracts and assimilate various literary and\u00a0vernacular\u00a0musical\u00a0traditions into a modern<\/em>\u00a0compositional rhetoric.\u00a0 Abstract Folklore<\/em><\/strong> includes creations in several genres such as Ballet, Opera, Cantata and Chamber Music. It also proposes a unique way to approach the Concerto and Symphony forms.<\/p>\n

One of his most recent commissions includes a new work for large ensemble from the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition (CCCC)<\/strong>, scheduled to premiere during the Grossman Ensemble\u2019s 2026\u201327 concert season, alongside a new piece by CCCC Founder and Director Augusta Read Thomas.<\/p>\n

In November 2023, Juan Trigos has been awarded with one of most important music composition\u2019s prizes in Canada, The Azrieli Commission for International Music of the Azrieli Foundation to write the Cantata-Oratorio Simetr\u00edas Prehisp\u00e1nicas (Prehispanic Symmetries)<\/strong> premiered last October 28, 2024, by the Chorus and members of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal conducted by Andrew Megill and streamed live on Medici TV, among other renowned platforms.<\/p>\n

In 2022, he has been awarded with the Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Eminent Scholar residency, to teach at Columbus State University, Georgia, as visiting professor for the Fall 2022 semester and compose his Percussion Symphony for eight percussionists, premiered last December 6, 2022. In 2020, has been awarded with the 2020 From Commission of the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. For his international career as a composer, conductor, and teacher, in 2017 he has been invited by the Department of Composition of the Eastman School of Music of Rochester, NY to be the Howard Hanson Visiting Professor 2017 and present, in April of the same year, two programs entirely dedicated to his music, interviews, a master class and a symposium to speak about his works. He is member of Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (Mexico).<\/p>\n

As a composer, whose work has been performed worldwide, two fundamental aspects distinguish his musical production: vocal music (opera and sacred) and instrumental music with a notable predilection for the concertante forms. His more relevant works include six symphonies, six operas, Ella-Miau (She-Meow), DeCachetitoRaspado (CheekToStubbledCheek) and the trilogy Mis Dos Cabezas Piensan Peor Que Una (My Two Heads Think Worse Than One), three Concertante Cantatas, concertos for several instruments and his production for guitar. Important orchestras and institutions had commissioned him music compositions. Among the latest and most significant are: Relojer\u00edas Sensibles, for solo guitar, commissioned by Geraldo Costa Neto (Brazil\/USA 2022), Ricercare VII commissioned by guitarist Dieter Hennings and percussionist Paul Vaillancourt (USA 2021), Conversiones for clarinet and piano, commissioned by clarinet player Vincent Dominguez (USA 2019); Suite for ensemble (Croatia 2019), commissioned by Cantus Ensemble; Four Poems by Ezra Pound commission for New Music USA 2017; Concerto Grosso composed for the Orquesta de C\u00e1mara del INBA (Chamber Orchestra of the National Institute of Fine Arts, Mexico 2016); Symphony n. 4 Nezahualcoyotl Icuicahuan (Chants of Nezahualcoyotl), written with the support of\u00a0 Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte – SNCA (Mexico 2016); Sonata for violin and piano, commissioned by Duo Francois (USA 2015); Sinfonia Breve written for the University of Central Florida (USA 2014), performed also by Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Sinaloa de las Artes (Mexico) and Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica Nacional of Guatemala; Clarinet Concerto with the support of the SNCA (2014), premiered by Camerata de Coahuila (Mexico 2014) and recorded by Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Heredia (Costa Rica, 2014);\u00a0 Symphony N.3 Ofrenda a los muertos, commissioned and performed by the Houston Symphony (2013), also performed by Filarm\u00f3nica del Estado de Quer\u00e9taro (2018), Sinf\u00f3nica del Estado de M\u00e9xico (2018), Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (2014), Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Nuevo Le\u00f3n (2014), and Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Guanajuato (2013); Cantata Concertante N. 3 Phos Hilaron, commissioned by the Diocesan Institute of Music and Liturgy of Reggio Emilia (chamber version 2011) and for the SNCA (orchestral version 2013); Concerto for Four Guitars for the Orchestra Sinfonica Tito Schipa (Italy 2010).<\/p>\n

Trigos as a conductor has premiered, promoted, and recorded an extensive catalogue of new works with numerous choirs and orchestras around the world.<\/strong> Currently he is Principal Conductor and Music Director of UK New Music Ensemble (Lexington, KY), The Last Hundred Ensemble<\/em> (Miami, FL) and Sinfonietta MIQ<\/em> (Guanajuato, Mexico)<\/p>\n

As the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the orchestra Sinf\u00f3nica de Oaxaca (Mexico), among other successful projects, during the\u00a02016 Trigos recorded,\u00a0for the Spanish label\u00a0iTinerant, four monographic compact discs\u00a0with works by the Mexican composers Carlos Jim\u00e9nez Mabarak, to celebrate\u00a0his 100th year of birth, V\u00edctor Rasgado, Jes\u00fas Villase\u00f1or and his own.\u00a0The same label recently published also his monographic CD \u201cTrigos\u201d including his Clarinet Concerto, Concerto for Four Guitars and Orchestra and Danza Concertante for piccolo and orchestra. He has been\u00a0the artistic director and principal conductor of the Academia Cervantina, ensemble created by the Festival International Cervantino (Mexico) to promote the training of high-level performers specialized in XX century and contemporary music.\u00a0As\u00a0principal conductor of the Eastman BroadBand Ensemble (USA) since 2007 he participated in many international tours and recorded for Bridge Records (2010) and Urtext (2012) two monographic CDs, respectively with music by Zohn-Muldoon (finalist for 2011 Pulitzer Prize) and S\u00e1nchez-Guti\u00e9rrez. As music director and principal conductor of Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Guanajuato (2012-2014), he recorded a triple CD with music by Mexican composers (Quindecim 2014), including his Cantata Concertante N.3 Phos Hilar\u00f3n<\/em> (orchestral version), a monographic CD with music by Carlos Ch\u00e1vez and \u201cThe Sleeping Beauty\u201d by R.Someso.<\/p>\n

Throughout twenty years of teaching, he organized successful workshops in which he had the opportunity to work with students of different levels of study and cultural backgrounds. In collaboration with Franco Donatoni, he organized an International Composition Course and Festival over four consecutive years (Mexico 1993-96). He was the principal teacher of composition, analysis, and orchestration at the Instituto Cardenal Miranda, and the University of Guanajuato. He also lectured and conducted composition seminars, workshops, master classes, and symposiums at several other institutions in Europe, United States, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico. Among the most noteworthy are University of Costa Rica, University of Cincinnati, Conservatorio F. A. Bonporti of Riva del Garda (Italy), Centro Nacional de las Artes, Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) Rotterdam Conservatory of Music (Netherlands), and Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal (Canada). Many of his students have earned top honors at prestigious international competitions. These include The Camargo Foundation (France), 9\u00d79 het Asko Shoenberg Ensemble (Amsterdam, Holland), \u201cAd Referendum II\u201d (Qu\u00e8bec, Canada), International Composition Competition \u201cMozart,\u201d Mozarteum University (Salzburg, Austria), \u201cReine Maria Jose\u201d (Gen\u00e8ve), \u201cConcorso Internazionale di Composizione per il Festival di Chitarra\u201d (Lago Negro, Italy), Concorso Internazionale di Composizione \u201cSuvini Zerboni,\u201d (Milan, Italy), and \u201cGaudeamus Music Week\u201d (Amsterdam, Holland), among others.<\/p>\n

Trigos teaches composition at the University of Kentucky, College of Fine Arts (Lexington, KY). At the same institution he also is music director and conductor of UK New Music Ensemble.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Juan Trigos earned his Master\u2019s Degrees in Orchestral Conducting (1991, main teacher Gianpiero Taverna) and Composition (1988, main teacher Niccol\u00f2 Castiglioni) at the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano (Italy). His Bachelor of Music in Chorus and Orchestra Conducting, Composition and Piano (1986) at the Instituto de Liturgia, M\u00fasica y Arte Cardenal Miranda (Mexico).
